New Patient Developmental-Behavioral Evaluations

New patient evaluations are completed over 3 separate visits to allow plenty of time for parents, and their child (if applicable/age appropriate) to discuss their concerns and questions, complete a developmental assessment, and review the results and recommendations from the assessment. Dividing the visit in this manner helps to decrease the stress and fatigue that can happen, especially for young children, when all three of these components are done on the same day.

Visit #1

1 hour Initial Intake Interview

Parents/caregivers will meet with Dr. Cohen for 1 hour to complete a comprehensive history, including review of the intake forms and questionnaires that were completed and submitted prior to scheduling the visit. The initial visit can be done in-person at Dr. Cohen’s office or via telehealth based on parent/caregiver’s preference.

Visit #2

2 hour Comprehensive Developmental-Behavioral Assessment

Dr. Cohen will spend time getting to know your child in an age-appropriate play-based manner. Using standardized assessments, Dr. Cohen is able to understand and gain insights regarding your child’s cognitive development and behaviors. The interactions and behavioral observations made during this visit aide Dr. Cohen in identifying your child’s strengths as well as any areas of challenge that could benefit from additional support. Dr. Cohen will also do a physical exam to assess your child’s health and development. The assessment visit is scheduled for 2 hours. Parents accompany their child on this visit. Parents are encouraged to be present during the assessment of younger children. For older children/adolescents, having their parent present during the assessment is flexible based on the parent and child’s preference and/or the standardized format of certain assessments. It is recommended that this visit be completed in-person, but if needed/preferred a telehealth assessment can be requested.

Visit #3

1 hour Review of Evaluation Results and Recommendations

During the 3rd visit Dr. Cohen will meet with parents/caregivers to review the overall results of the evaluation, including diagnostic impressions, and most importantly recommendations about how to best help and support your child’s development and behavior into the future. This visit is scheduled for 1 hour to allow time to discuss the results and recommendations as well as to answer parent/caregiver questions that may arise during the visit. If desired and age-appropriate, older children/adolescents can attend this visit with their parents/caregivers or a separate visit can be scheduled to discuss the results with older children/adolescents. This visit can be done in-person at Dr. Cohen’s office or via telehealth based on parent/caregiver’s preference.
